The pool at Villa Bentota unquestionably steals the show. Sun loungers, bar snacks, drinks. The rooms almost feel like private villas. The main bedroom areas are expansive and you’ll find the toilets just adjacent. The property dates back to the 19th-century and was renovated first by iconic Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa in the ’70s and more recently by Sri Lankan designer Shanth Fernando.

If you’re looking for romance (most of the guests here are couples, so you probably are), the Executive Suite’s courtyard comes with a private plunge pool.

The hotel’s main lounge area was our go-to spot — private and relaxing, with a truly beach-side vibe with white canvas couches. It’s one of the only places on the property with a consistent wifi connection as well (other than the rooms).

Did we mention the gorgeous, untouched beach? Walking over to this stretch of sand will plop you right down in paradise (as if you weren’t there already).

Only catch is you’ve got to cross railroad tracks to get there; people-packed train carriages journeying along the property’s edge a few times an hour remind you of where you are.
